The Brown Turkey Fig Tree is a popular variety known for its large, sweet, and juicy figs. With its broad, lobed leaves and robust growth, this tree not only provides delicious fruit but also adds a lush, tropical feel to your garden.

  • Botanical name: Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey'
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers full sun to partial shade

WATER:
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil is dry. Approximately every 1-2 weeks. Watering frequency may vary depending on climate and the plant’s establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 7-10; thrives in well-draining soil

Note: The Brown Turkey Fig Tree may experience some leaf drop and minimal foliage on the lower branches, especially during the winter months. This is a natural part of its growth cycle and helps the tree conserve energy. Regular pruning can improve air circulation and fruit production.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Brown Turkey Fig Tree, scientifically known as Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey', is a highly esteemed fruit tree cherished for its abundant yield of sweet, brownish-purple figs. Renowned for its robustness and adaptability, this variety produces large, delicious fruits that ripen in late summer to early fall. Ideal for gardeners looking to harvest their own figs for fresh eating, drying, or preserves, the Brown Turkey Fig thrives in a range of climates and soil types. With its attractive foliage and stature, it serves as both a productive fruit tree and a striking ornamental addition to the landscape.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; mature height of 10-25 feet and width of 10-15 feet, but can be kept smaller with pruning.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Brown Turkey Fig Trees benefit from regular watering during their establishment phase and thrive in full sun. Once established, water deeply but infrequently. Proper care and sunlight exposure are crucial for fruit production and overall health.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune Brown Turkey Fig Tree in late winter to maintain size and shape and encourage productive growth. Remove dead or diseased branches.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and fruit production. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In colder zones, mulch around the base to protect roots or grow the tree in a container that can be moved indoors during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Plant the tree, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Consider spacing and the mature size if planting more than one tree, allowing ample room for growth.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-10

The Brown Turkey Fig is well-suited for USDA Zones 7-10, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. It is one of the more cold-hardy fig varieties, capable of withstanding brief periods of cold temperatures, though winter protection may be beneficial in the northern parts of its range. In cooler zones, it can be grown in containers and brought indoors during winter to protect from freezing.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
