PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Bracken’s Brown Beauty Southern Magnolia, scientifically known as Magnolia grandiflora ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’, is a beautiful evergreen shade tree prized for its large fragrant white flowers, glossy dark green foliage, and attractive bronze-brown leaf undersides. This cold-hardy Southern Magnolia cultivar offers year-round beauty, dense evergreen screening, and a more compact growth habit than many traditional Southern Magnolias. Its elegant appearance and adaptability make it a favorite for privacy screens, specimen plantings, and residential landscapes

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing evergreen tree. Typically reaches approximately 30–50 feet tall and 15–30 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Bracken’s Brown Beauty benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Bracken’s Brown Beauty Southern Magnolia grows best in full sun to partial shade. Trees planted in sunnier locations typically develop denser growth and produce the most abundant flowering.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. This magnolia naturally develops a dense, pyramidal shape, so minimal pruning is needed. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can reduce flowering and disrupt its form.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and foliage. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Bracken’s Brown Beauty Southern Magnolia is cold hardy within its recommended zones and more tolerant of cooler temperatures than many other magnolias. In colder regions, applying 2–3 inches of mulch around the base helps protect roots and retain moisture. Young trees benefit from wind protection during harsh winter conditions.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and plant so the top of the rootball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply mulch around the base while keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 7-9

Bracken’s Brown Beauty Southern Magnolia thrives in warm climates and is one of the most cold-hardy Southern Magnolia varieties available. It performs exceptionally well throughout USDA Zones 7–9, where it provides year-round evergreen foliage, fragrant blooms, and dense screening. This variety tolerates colder temperatures better than many Southern Magnolias, but it requires significant protection from harsh winter weather in colder climates. For this reason, we recommend planting it in USDA Zones 7–9 for the best long-term performance.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
