Planting instructions
Choose a location in full sun with well-draining soil, at least 10 feet from your home and other structures so the tree has room to reach its 15–20 foot mature spread. Avoid low spots where water collects. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and about the same depth as the nursery container. Place the tree, backfill with native soil, and gently firm to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches from the trunk.
Watering & sunlight
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather.

Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Blue Diamond Spruce grows best in full sun, which keeps it dense and brings out its most intense blue color.
Care guide

PRUNING:
No pruning is required to keep its neat pyramidal shape. If desired, light trimming can be done in spring as new growth expands.

FERTILIZING:
Usually unnecessary. If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer for evergreens in early spring. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Very cold hardy and typically needs no special winter protection. Water deeply in fall before the ground freezes.

Answered by Simply Trees plant experts
How big does Blue Diamond Spruce get?
Blue Diamond Spruce reaches up to 32 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide at maturity. Because it grows slowly, it stays compact for many years.
How fast does Blue Diamond Spruce grow?
Blue Diamond Spruce is slow growing, typically adding about 4–6 inches per year and reaching around 4 feet tall after 10 years.
Where is the best place to plant Blue Diamond Spruce?
Plant it in full sun with well-draining, neutral to slightly acidic soil, and avoid low spots where water collects. It makes a striking blue focal point in the front yard, lawn, or a mixed border. Allow room for its eventual 15–20 foot spread.
How far apart should I plant Blue Diamond Spruce?
Space trees about 15–20 feet apart so each one has room to keep its full, symmetrical pyramid shape at maturity.
Does Blue Diamond Spruce stay blue all year?
Yes. Its intensely blue needles with a silvery overlay hold their color year-round. Full sun brings out the most intense blue.
Is Blue Diamond Spruce good for smaller yards?
Yes, with some planning. Because it grows slowly, about 4–6 inches per year, it stays compact for many years, reaching around 4 feet tall after 10 years. At full maturity it can reach up to 32 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide, so choose a spot with room for it to grow.
Does Blue Diamond Spruce need pruning to keep its shape?
No. It's well branched from the base and naturally forms a neat, symmetrical pyramid without shearing. If desired, light trimming can be done in spring as new growth expands.
Are Blue Diamond Spruce needles sharp?
Yes. Like all Colorado spruces, Blue Diamond has stiff, prickly needles. Consider placing it a few feet back from walkways, play areas, and entryways.
Is Blue Diamond Spruce cold hardy?
Yes. It's very cold hardy in USDA Zones 3–7 and handles cold, wind, and dry conditions well. In-ground trees typically need no special winter protection; just water deeply in fall before the ground freezes.
What's the difference between Blue Diamond Spruce and Hoopsii Spruce?
Both are Colorado blue spruces with striking silvery-blue needles. Blue Diamond grows more slowly and stays compact for many years, forming a neat, symmetrical pyramid without shearing. Hoopsii grows a little larger, reaching 30–50 feet tall, and is better suited to open spaces, windbreaks, and screens.
