Its improved resistance to boxwood blight and excellent year-round color make it a reliable choice for both formal and informal landscapes.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Better Boxwood® Renaissance, scientifically known as Buxus Hybrid ‘HER200B01’, is a compact evergreen shrub bred for exceptional disease resistance, rich year-round color, and minimal maintenance. Its dense, naturally rounded habit makes it ideal for low hedges, borders, topiary, containers, and formal garden designs. Renaissance holds its deep green foliage better than many traditional boxwoods while requiring less pruning, making it an outstanding choice for modern landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Slow-growing evergreen shrub. Typically reaches approximately 1–2 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Approximately once or twice per week during establishment, then less frequently once established. Better Boxwood Renaissance prefers evenly moist, well-draining soil but should not remain overly wet. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, and establishment phase.

Better Boxwood Renaissance grows best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, afternoon shade helps maintain healthy foliage and reduce heat stress.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Renaissance naturally maintains a dense, compact shape and typically requires very little pruning. Light pruning once a year in late winter or early spring is usually sufficient to maintain formal hedges or topiary designs.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if desired to encourage healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Better Boxwood Renaissance is cold hardy throughout its recommended growing range and generally requires little winter protection once established. Applying mulch around the root zone helps conserve moisture and insulate roots during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a planting location with well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and plant so the top of the rootball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly after planting, and apply mulch around the base while keeping mulch several inches away from the stems.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Better Boxwood Renaissance performs well across a wide range of climates and is especially valued for its excellent disease resistance and year-round evergreen color. It grows best in well-draining soil and adapts to a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. In warmer climates, afternoon shade helps protect foliage from excessive heat, while cooler climates allow it to tolerate more direct sun. This compact boxwood is an excellent choice for formal gardens, borders, foundation plantings, and containers.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
