Berry White® Hydrangea produces large, cone-shaped flower clusters held upright on strong stems for an impressive summer display. Flowers emerge white in July before gradually transitioning to deep pink from the bottom of each panicle upward, creating beautiful multi-toned color that becomes especially vibrant as temperatures cool.

  • Botanical name: Hydrangea paniculata ‘Renba’ PP28,509
  • Bloom time: Summer into fall
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Some afternoon shade can be beneficial in hotter climates.

WATER
Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. Water deeply approximately once or twice per week during establishment, adjusting based on rainfall and soil moisture. Once established, water during extended hot or dry periods and avoid consistently saturated soil. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, sunlight exposure, soil type, weather, drainage, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 3–8. Berry White® Hydrangea is exceptionally cold hardy and adapts well to a broad range of temperate climates. Its dark pink flower coloration can be especially impressive in cooler climates where evening temperatures gradually decrease toward fall.

Note: Berry White® Hydrangea flowers do not begin dark pink. The large panicles emerge white in summer and gradually transition to deep pink from the bottom upward as they mature. Flower color and the timing or intensity of the transition can vary with climate and seasonal temperatures, with particularly rich coloration often developing in cooler conditions.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Berry White® Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea paniculata ‘Renba’, is a showy panicle hydrangea prized for its large, cone-shaped flower clusters and strong, upright stems. Blooms emerge white in summer before gradually transforming to deep pink, creating beautiful two-toned color as the season progresses. With its long-lasting flowers, upright growth habit, and excellent cold hardiness, Berry White® Hydrangea is an eye-catching flowering shrub for borders, hedges, foundation plantings, and cut flower gardens.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Reaches approximately 6–7 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water your newly planted Berry White® Hydrangea when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry, typically about once or twice per week during establishment. Once established, water deeply during extended hot or dry periods and avoid allowing the soil to remain consistently saturated. Always check soil moisture before watering rather than following a fixed schedule. Watering frequency varies depending on grow zone, local climate, rainfall, temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, drainage, and establishment phase.

Berry White® Hydrangea grows well in full sun to partial shade. In cooler climates, it can thrive with abundant direct sunlight, while some afternoon shade can help reduce heat and moisture stress in hotter parts of its growing range.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune Berry White® Hydrangea in early spring before vigorous new growth begins. Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so pruning can be used to remove dead or damaged branches, improve shape, and encourage strong new stems and flowers. Avoid unnecessarily severe pruning of young or newly established plants. First Editions specifically recommends early spring pruning for Berry White®.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, apply a balanced fertilizer in spring or early summer when needed to support healthy foliage and flowering. First Editions recommends a balanced NPK fertilizer for Berry White®. Avoid excessive fertilization and do not fertilize in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Berry White® Hydrangea is highly cold hardy and suitable for USDA Zones 3–8. Established plants generally require minimal winter protection within their recommended growing range. Applying a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone can help moderate soil temperature and moisture, particularly for newly planted shrubs, but keep mulch several inches away from the stems.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location for your Berry White® Hydrangea that receives full sun to partial shade and has well-draining soil. Dig a planting hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Carefully remove the hydrangea from its nursery container and loosen any circling or tightly bound roots. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill using the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil to remove large air pockets, then water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the stems. Space Berry White® Hydrangeas approximately 4–5 feet apart for individual specimens or closer when creating a denser flowering hedge, allowing for their mature 4–5-foot width.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 3-8

Berry White® Hydrangea thrives in USDA Zones 3–8, offering excellent cold hardiness across a wide range of climates. It grows well in full sun to partial shade, although some afternoon shade can be beneficial in hotter climates. Its white flowers transition to deep pink as the season progresses, with the breeder noting that the richest flower coloration occurs especially well in cooler climates where evening temperatures gradually decrease in fall.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Berry White® Hydrangea reaches approximately 6–7 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide at maturity. Its upright growth habit and strong stems make it an excellent choice for flowering hedges, borders, foundation plantings, and specimen plantings.

Berry White® Hydrangea has a moderate to fast growth rate and may grow approximately 1–2 feet per year under favorable growing conditions. Growth rate varies depending on climate, sunlight, soil, moisture, pruning, and overall plant health.

Plant Berry White® Hydrangea in a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. In cooler climates, it can thrive with plenty of direct sunlight, while afternoon shade can be beneficial in hotter climates. Allow enough space for its mature 4–5-foot width.

Space Berry White® Hydrangeas approximately 4–5 feet apart to accommodate their mature width. For a denser flowering hedge, they can be planted somewhat closer depending on the desired finished appearance.

Berry White® Hydrangea begins flowering in summer, typically around July, and its showy panicles continue changing color as the season progresses. The flowers emerge white before transitioning to deep pink from the bottom of the flower cluster upward.

Berry White® is a panicle hydrangea and blooms on new wood, meaning its flowers develop on growth produced during the current growing season. This also makes pruning easier because you do not need to preserve last year’s stems solely for their flower buds.

Prune Berry White® Hydrangea in early spring before vigorous new growth begins. Remove dead or damaged branches and prune as needed to maintain the desired shape and encourage strong new growth.

Berry White® Hydrangea grows in full sun to partial shade. Full sun can encourage strong flowering in cooler climates, while some afternoon shade may be beneficial in regions with intense summer heat.

Berry White® Hydrangea produces large panicles that begin white and gradually turn deep pink, with the color transformation beginning at the bottom and moving upward. At certain stages, individual flower panicles can display both white and pink simultaneously.

Flower coloration can vary with climate and seasonal temperatures. First Editions notes that Berry White® develops particularly impressive coloration in cooler climates with gradually decreasing evening temperatures in fall, so plants grown in warmer conditions may develop pink coloration differently or less intensely.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
