The Bartlett Pear Tree produces classic golden-yellow pears with smooth, juicy flesh and a sweet, aromatic flavor. Showy white spring blossoms develop into versatile pears that are excellent for fresh eating, baking, canning, preserving, and desserts.

  • Botanical name: Pyrus communis ‘Bartlett’
  • Bloom time: Early to mid-spring
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sunlight with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun per day.

WATER
Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all, so check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball and water when it feels dry. Water slowly and thoroughly, allowing moisture to penetrate the entire root ball and surrounding root zone rather than watering frequently and shallowly. For more in depth information, please see Watering and Sunlight section below.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Best suited for Zones 5–8. Bartlett Pear Trees perform best in climates with reliably cool winters capable of providing approximately 800 chill hours, followed by warm, sunny growing seasons. Very mild-winter climates may not provide enough chilling for dependable flowering and fruit production.

Note: For the most reliable pear production, Bartlett should be planted near a different compatible European pear variety with an overlapping bloom period. Cross-pollination can significantly improve fruit set and overall crop size.

We cannot guarantee the Bartlett Pear Tree you receive will already be flowering or bearing fruit. This depends on the season, tree maturity, pollination, weather, and overall growth pattern.

Bartlett Pear Trees perform best with cross-pollination from a different compatible European pear variety with an overlapping bloom period. Planting a suitable pollinator nearby, such as Bosc, D’Anjou, or Moonglow, can significantly improve fruit set and pear production. For dependable crops, we recommend planting Bartlett with a compatible pollinator rather than relying on a single tree.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Bartlett Pear Tree, scientifically known as Pyrus communis ‘Bartlett’, is a classic fruit tree prized for its large, golden-yellow pears with sweet, juicy, aromatic flesh. Beautiful white spring blossoms develop into the familiar bell-shaped pears that are excellent for fresh eating, baking, canning, preserves, and desserts. One of the most recognizable European pear varieties, Bartlett is an excellent addition to home orchards and backyard gardens

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate to fast growth rate. Reaches approximately 12–15 feet tall and 9–12 feet wide at maturity as a semi-dwarf tree.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Watering needs are never one-size-fits-all. Weather, soil type, drainage, plant size, and planting time all affect how quickly a plant dries out.

Use a slow-running hose, soaker hose, or drip system to water the root ball and surrounding root zone thoroughly. Allow the water to penetrate deeply (not just wet the top few inches of soil), and avoid frequent, shallow watering. Before watering again, check the soil 3–4 inches deep near the root ball. If it feels dry, repeat this deep-watering process. If it feels moist or soggy, wait and check again in 1–2 days. Check the soil of newly planted trees and shrubs several times per week, especially during hot, dry, or windy weather. Irrigation run times will vary based on flow rate, soil, and system setup.

Bartlett Pear Trees grow and produce fruit best in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plenty of sunlight encourages healthy flowering, fruit development, and ripening.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune Bartlett Pear Trees while dormant in late winter to early spring before vigorous new growth begins. Remove dead, damaged, diseased, crossing, or inward-growing branches and maintain an open, well-structured canopy that allows sunlight and air circulation throughout the tree.

FERTILIZING
Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish. Once established, fertilize in spring or early summer when needed using a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for fruit trees. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of flowering and fruit production. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.

WINTER PROTECTION
Established Bartlett Pear Trees are cold hardy within their recommended growing range and generally require minimal winter protection. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone to help regulate soil temperature and moisture, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk. Although the dormant tree tolerates winter cold, open flowers and developing buds can be damaged by late spring freezes.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Choose a location for your Bartlett Pear Tree that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day and has well-draining soil with good air circulation. Avoid low-lying areas where excess water or cold air tends to collect. Dig a planting hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. Carefully remove the tree from its nursery container and loosen any circling or tightly bound roots. Position the tree so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, keeping the graft union above the soil line. Backfill using the native soil removed from the planting hole without adding compost, peat moss, sand, rock, or other amendments directly to the hole. Gently firm the soil, water slowly and deeply throughout the root ball and surrounding soil, and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone while keeping it several inches away from the trunk. Space semi-dwarf Bartlett Pear Trees approximately 12–15 feet apart.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-8

Bartlett Pear Trees grow best in USDA Zones 5–8, where winters provide sufficient chilling followed by a warm growing season. Bartlett requires approximately 800 chill hours, making it better suited to areas with reliably cool winters than very mild-winter climates. Full sun, good air circulation, and well-draining soil support healthy growth, flowering, and fruit development. Like other European pears, spring flowers can be damaged by late freezes, potentially reducing the crop for that season.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

A semi-dwarf Bartlett Pear Tree typically reaches approximately 12–15 feet tall and 9–12 feet wide at maturity.

Bartlett Pear Trees have a moderate to fast growth rate, typically growing approximately 1–2 feet per year under favorable growing conditions. Growth rate can vary depending on rootstock, sunlight, soil, moisture, climate, pruning, and overall tree health.

Plant your Bartlett Pear Tree in full sun with well-draining soil and good air circulation. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day and avoid low-lying areas where water or cold air tends to collect.

Space semi-dwarf Bartlett Pear Trees approximately 12–15 feet apart. This provides room for their mature canopies while maintaining good sunlight exposure and air circulation.

Bartlett Pear Trees produce clusters of white flowers in early to mid-spring. Exact bloom timing varies depending on grow zone, seasonal temperatures, and local weather.

For dependable fruit production, yes. Bartlett should be grown near another compatible European pear variety that flowers at approximately the same time.

Compatible European pear varieties such as Bosc, D’Anjou, and Moonglow can serve as pollination partners when their bloom periods overlap. Avoid relying on Seckel as Bartlett’s pollination partner, as Bartlett and Seckel are generally considered incompatible with one another.

Bartlett Pear Trees generally begin producing pears approximately 4–6 years after planting, although the timing varies based on rootstock, tree age at planting, pollination, climate, and care.

Bartlett pears typically mature in late summer, often around August into September depending on climate and location. They should generally be harvested when mature but still firm and allowed to finish ripening indoors rather than becoming fully soft on the tree.

Bartlett Pear Trees require approximately 800 chill hours during winter. Adequate winter chilling supports normal dormancy, bud development, flowering, and fruit production the following season.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
