PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

Barbara Karst Bougainvillea, botanically known as Bougainvillea ‘Barbara Karst’, is a vibrant, fast-growing flowering shrub celebrated for its bold magenta-red bracts and exceptional heat tolerance. This tropical favorite delivers nonstop color in warm climates and is commonly used as a climbing vine, espalier, hedge, or accent shrub. With minimal water needs and a love for full sun, Barbara Karst Bougainvillea is a standout choice for dramatic landscape color.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Fast growth rate; typically reaches 6–10 feet tall and wide when maintained as a shrub.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply once every 7–10 days during establishment; once established, water sparingly every 10–14 days, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Barbara Karst Bougainvillea requires full sun to bloom heavily and maintain vibrant color. At least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential for best performance.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING:
Prune lightly throughout the growing season to shape and control size, and more heavily after major bloom cycles. Wear gloves when pruning, as branches have thorns.

FERTILIZING:
Feed with a balanced or bloom-boosting fertilizer during the growing season. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which encourage leaf growth at the expense of flowers.

WINTER PROTECTION:
Not frost tolerant. In regions that experience freezing temperatures, protect with frost cloth or grow in containers that can be moved indoors during winter.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth it was growing in the container. Use well-draining soil and avoid amending too heavily, as bougainvillea prefers slightly lean conditions. Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch sparingly, keeping it away from the base of the plant.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 9-11

Barbara Karst Bougainvillea thrives in hot, sunny climates with mild winters and low humidity stress. It performs best in regions with long growing seasons and minimal frost exposure. This variety is extremely well suited for Southern, coastal, and desert climates where heat and sunlight are abundant. In colder zones, it is commonly grown in containers and overwintered indoors.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
