Ace of Hearts Redbud is a compact, easy-to-grow ornamental tree that delivers outstanding beauty in every season. Bright rosy-pink flowers cover the bare branches in early spring before dense, glossy heart-shaped leaves emerge to create a full, rounded canopy. Its naturally compact size and refined growth habit make it one of the best redbuds for smaller landscapes, front yards, patios, and garden focal points.

  • Botanical name: Cercis canadensis 'Ace of Hearts'
  • Bloom time: Early spring
  • Deciduous
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT
Prefers full sun to partial shade.

WATER
Water deeply at the base when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, water less frequently during dry periods. Watering frequency may vary based on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9. Ace of Hearts Redbud thrives in temperate climates and is an excellent choice for smaller landscapes, specimen plantings, and front yard focal points.

Note: Ace of Hearts Redbud naturally develops a dense, rounded canopy and maintains a more compact size than many other Eastern Redbud varieties, making it an excellent choice where space is limited.

For the healthiest establishment, check the soil near the base of the tree before watering rather than following a fixed schedule. Water deeply when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry.

PLANT DESCRIPTION & MATURE SIZE

The Ace of Hearts Redbud, scientifically known as Cercis canadensis 'Ace of Hearts', is a compact ornamental tree prized for its abundant rosy-pink spring flowers, dense heart-shaped foliage, and naturally rounded growth habit. Blooming before the leaves emerge, this beautiful redbud creates a vibrant early spring display before developing a lush canopy of glossy green leaves. Its smaller mature size and tidy form make it an excellent choice for front yards, patios, foundation plantings, and smaller landscapes.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate-growing deciduous ornamental tree. Typically reaches approximately 12–15 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide at maturity.

WATERING & SUNLIGHT

Water deeply at the base when the top 2–3 inches of soil begin to dry. During establishment, this is typically once or twice per week, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Once established, water less frequently, providing occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Watering frequency will vary depending on climate, soil type, rainfall, sunlight exposure, and the tree's establishment phase.

Ace of Hearts Redbud grows best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages the heaviest flowering, while afternoon shade can help protect the foliage in hotter climates.

PLANT CARE & PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PRUNING
Prune immediately after flowering if needed to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain the tree's naturally rounded shape. Little pruning is typically required once established.

FERTILIZING
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if desired to encourage healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION
Ace of Hearts Redbud is cold hardy throughout its recommended growing range. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help conserve moisture and insulate the root system during the first few winters after planting.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Plant Ace of Hearts Redbud in full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the rootball and no deeper than the rootball itself. Position the top of the rootball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, backfill with native soil, water deeply after planting, and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base while keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

USDA GROW ZONE:

Zones 5-9

Ace of Hearts Redbud thrives in a wide range of climates and performs best in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. It is highly adaptable throughout much of the United States and offers excellent cold hardiness while tolerating summer heat with proper watering during establishment. In hotter climates, afternoon shade can help reduce leaf scorch.

Important: USDA Hardiness Zones only measure a plant's cold tolerance. They do not account for heat tolerance, humidity, rainfall, or other climate factors. Always consider your local growing conditions in addition to your USDA Zone when selecting plants.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
