Sizing Information
Hey there, plant and tree enthusiasts! We get it, size matters when it comes to picking out the perfect green addition for your space. So let's dive into the nitty-gritty on how sizing works in our world of fabulous foliage.
GALLON SIZING
First off, about the gallon sizing: It’s sort of like the “medium, large, extra-large” of the plant kingdom. But, here’s the catch—different vendors and growers may have their own interpretation of what, say, a “3-gallon” plant should look like. One grower’s 3-gallon hydrangea shrub might be bushier and taller than another’s. It’s not a one-size-fits-all scenario. So keep in mind that gallon sizes are more of a general guideline rather than a strict measurement.
And just to clear up another common question—gallon sizing doesn’t actually refer to how much liquid the pot holds. In the nursery world, “gallon” is more of a made-up sizing term than an exact science. It’s a long-standing industry shorthand that roughly corresponds to the container size the plant is grown in, not an exact volume. We get that it’s confusing (trust us, we didn’t invent it), but it’s the standard used across the plant world. If you’re ever unsure, just reach out—we’re happy to talk through sizing before you order.
"JUMBO" SIZING
Our “Jumbo" trees are the most mature and established options we offer. These typically come in 7, 10, or 15-gallon sizes, though the exact size may vary depending on the tree variety.
“Jumbo” refers not just to the container size but also to the maturity of the tree and the size of its rootball. Compared to a 4–5 ft tree of the same variety, Jumbo trees are noticeably more developed with stronger root systems, thicker calipers, and fuller growth.
Please note: Because 7, 10, and 15-gallon containers are often too large for our shipping boxes, many Jumbo trees are shipped with their rootballs wrapped in burlap to fit securely for transit.
If you’re unsure which gallon size a specific Jumbo tree falls under, or have any questions about sizing, we’re always happy to help—just reach out! And if you’re unfamiliar with nursery gallon sizing, be sure to check out our Gallon Sizing for more context.
FRUIT AND CITRUS TREES + OLIVE TREES
Our fruit and citrus trees are often used as outdoor patio or indoor plants, and are grown in pots. For this reason, the height measurements provided for these trees are taken from the base of the pot to the top of the tree, to ensure precise and consistent sizing information for our customers.
ROSE TREES
Our rose trees are often used to add color and charm to patios, entryways, or garden beds, and are grown in containers or planters. Because of this, the height measurements listed for our rose trees are taken from the base of the pot to the top of the tree, so you can count on accurate and consistent sizing.
HOUSE PLANTS
For our houseplants, we measure from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tallest leaf. Since every plant grows a little differently, this gives you the most accurate idea of the plant’s overall presence and height when it arrives. Keep in mind that natural variation is normal—no two plants are exactly the same!
SLOW SEASONAL GROWTH
Sometimes when plants arrive from our growers—especially during seasonal changes—they can be a bit shorter than expected. If we notice a significant size difference from what’s listed on our website, we’ll reach out by email before shipping so you know exactly what to expect.
The time of year plays a big role in plant height. Many plants slow their growth during certain seasons, so they may not be at peak height when you receive them. Weather conditions, soil quality, and other natural factors can also affect their size. Occasionally, we prune our trees before shipping to promote healthy growth and maintain their shape, which can temporarily reduce their height.
The great news? Plants grow! With a little time and care, your new tree or plant will continue to mature and reach its expected size.
If you ever receive notice from us about a size difference, we’ll work with you to find the best solution—whether that’s a partial refund to reflect the change or canceling your order if it’s not the right fit. Your satisfaction (and your garden’s happiness) always come first.
SIZING FOR LARGE ORDERS
As for large orders, say 10 plants or more, we can’t guarantee they'll all be identical twins in height and/or width. They're individual beauties, each with their own quirks. Size is a fluid concept in the plant world, and the most important thing is to enjoy the journey as your new leafy companions flourish and grow.
