Giant Leopard Plant is a striking perennial known for its large, bold, and glossy leaves, often speckled with distinctive leopard-like spots. Its dramatic foliage adds a touch of exotic flair to gardens and shaded areas, making it a popular choice for creating a lush, tropical look.

  • Botanical name: Farfugium japonicum var. giganteum
  • Bloom time: Fall
  • Evergreen
  • Grown in the USA

SUNLIGHT:
Prefers partial to full shade

WATER:
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Approximately every 1-2 weeks. Watering frequency may vary based on climate and establishment phase.

IDEAL CLIMATE:
Hardy in USDA Zones 7-10; thrives in temperate to subtropical climates with well-draining soil

Note: Ensure the Giant Leopard Plant is planted in a shaded location to protect its striking foliage from direct sunlight.

With the Giant Leopard Plant, you can expect a lush and vibrant foliage display throughout the growing season. Its large, glossy leaves with striking variegation will lend a tropical ambiance to your landscape. Though it occasionally produces yellow daisy-like flowers in late summer, the main attraction of this plant lies in its impressive and attention-grabbing foliage. Enjoy the bold presence of the Giant Leopard Plant as it adds an element of the exotic to your garden or outdoor space.

GROWTH RATE & MATURE SIZE:

Moderate growth rate; reaches a mature height of 2-3 feet and width of 2-4 feet.

The Giant Leopard Plant thrives in partial to full shade conditions, making it an excellent choice for shaded garden spots. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. During hot and dry periods, be attentive to watering needs and adjust the frequency accordingly. Avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight, as it prefers a shadier environment.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

To plant the Giant Leopard Plant, choose a location with partial to full shade, as direct sunlight can scorch its foliage. The soil should be well-draining, rich in organic matter, and kept consistently moist. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball, ensuring the crown is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil and gently pat it down to eliminate air pockets. Whether you decide to grow it in a pot or in the ground, ensure the plant has enough space to expand and thrive.

PLANT CARE

PRUNING:
Giant Leopard Plant requires minimal pruning. Remove damaged or unsightly leaves as needed and deadhead spent flowers to maintain a neat appearance.

FERTILIZING:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid fertilizing for the first 2–3 months after delivery to allow the plant to adjust and establish.

WINTER PROTECTION:
In zones 7–10, mulch around the base to insulate roots from freezing temperatures. In harsher conditions, consider using frost blankets or burlap for added protection.

All California orders require a mandatory inspection by the Texas Department of Agriculture (yep, it’s a USDA thing!). These inspections happen about once a week—typically on Tuesdays, though the day can vary. If you place an order just after an inspection, your plant may not ship for several days until the next one. Unfortunately, we’re not able to expedite this part of the process.

Also, due to USDA regulations, we’re unable to ship oak trees, citrus or fruit trees (except olive trees) to California. This rule helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases and applies to nurseries across the country.

Thanks for your patience—we’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.
